US PGA Championship: Jordan Spieth one over par after first round

Johnson, the No. 1 player in the world, broke par for the first time in a major since the U.S. Open last summer at Oakmont, which he won for his first major.

Still, Spieth didn't shoot himself out of the tournament, making birdie on the par-5 seventh and another on the eighth after stuffing a wedge to two feet.

"It was a little bit of a safe shot into the green", he said.

"The disappointing thing was we got put on the clock when we were a hole ahead of the group behind us and that's when my round started to go..." he rued, speaking to RTÉ Sport shortly after signing his card. Johnston split just five (of 14) fairways and landed eight greens in regulation today.

Among afternoon starters, fourth-ranked Rory McIlroy was level par after four holes and South Korean An Byeong-Hun was three-under through five after opening on the back nine with 3 consecutive birdies. "Make sure the worst score you make is a bogey and give yourself a couple of good chances on the easier holes".

Olesen had only played 13 majors before this week, but was ninth in the Open in 2012 and finished sixth on his Masters debut the following year.

"To be honest with you, I felt like crap".

The 35 year old from Groves got into the year's last major by winning the Barracuda Championship this past Sunday in Reno, NV.

"I think it had a lot to do with the speed of the greens, how fast they were".

"I feel like I played pretty solid", he said. If one of your strengths is putting, which it is for me, I rely heavily on that confidence-wise, because my game may not be great one day, and I can save myself with the putting and chipping. "I just have to stay relaxed the next few days, still trying to keep the ball in the fairway, and then I know I can hit it close and make some birdies".
