PlayStation 4 Update Will Add 1080p60 Twitch Streaming

Other features of the firmware update include an overhaul to the console's system for master and sub accounts, the ability to follow PSN users, and the addition of notifications in the PS4's quick menu.

The Playstation 4 5.0 update to the console's firmware is nearly upon us, and Playstation has said that there are going to be a number of improvements such as allowing streaming on Twitch at 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second, interface improvements, and more to improve the content sharing experience for gamers.

Eurogamer obtained a copy of the update's release notes and revealed some of the changes which will include changes to the console's account system and improved Twitch streaming on PlayStation 4 Pro. Currently, the console allows for Shareplay and Remote Play in 1080p. You'll also be able to follow whoever you want without needing a friend request to be verified, and without filling up your friend limit. Decide whether you only want existing friends to follow you or block other users altogether.

The plus for developers is that this change is supposed to allow content to be seen and shared by more users. This means you don't have to fill up your friends list in order to get updates. Family accounts will be able to have several child accounts tied to them, with unique parental controls for each one. Accounts belonging to other PS4s can be sent to these adult accounts so that everyone is collected under the same family account, if desired.

Sony is also introducing a new web application to manage family accounts via PC and smartphone.

There are also some quality of life changes coming to the UI, as notifications can be viewed from the quick menu, as well as the status of uploads and downloads.

Behind the scenes, Sony will add support for bundle and compilation discs, with or without add-ons, and discs which support games and add-ons (such as in a Game of the Year Edition) which don't need developers to rework any code.

The PlayStation 4 5.0 firmware update will launch on a yet to be confirmed date.
