Trump threatens 'fury' against N Korea

Trump threatens 'fury' against N Korea

"North Korea best not make anymore threats to the United States".

The latest revelations come a month after the United States said that it believed that up to 60 nuclear weapons are now controlled by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, far more than previously thought.

Mr. Kim vowed a "thousand-fold" revenge for the sanctions, according to a statement read on North Korean state-run TV. "They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen", Trump said, according to Reuters.

North Korea has achieved its goal of producing a miniaturised nuclear warhead which could be attached to long range missiles, it has been reported.

His warning came days after the United Nations passed sharp new sanctions against North Korea in response to its test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile - said to be capable of hitting the US.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho this week said Pyongyang "will, under no circumstances, put the nukes and ballistic rockets on the negotiating table", and would "teach the U.S. a severe lesson" if it used military force against North Korea.

In recent months, North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests that have incensed the White House.

A new poll by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs shows that more than 60 percent of Americans support using USA troops in a conflict if North Korea invades South Korea.

The US calculated last month that North Korea has up to 60 nuclear weapons, the Post said, more than double most assessments by independent experts.

North Korea has made no secret of its plans to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the United States and has ignored worldwide calls to halt its nuclear and missile programmes.

The DIA and Pentagon did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's requests for comment on the report.

Under the 2012 agreement with the US, South Korea is now allowed to develop missiles with a range of up to 800km (497 miles) and a payload of 500kg, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI).

The president tweeted: 'After many years of failure, countries are coming together to finally address the dangers posed by North Korea. The Trump administration, which ostentatiously announced this year that it was ending the Obama administration's policy of "strategic patience", now seems willing to wait for at least some period of time to see if the new sanctions lead North Korea to reconsider that position. "We must be tough & decisive!", the USA leader wrote on Twitter.
