Marines declare 3 missing from Osprey 'deceased'

The Australian Navy found a missing U.S. Marine aircraft submerged after it crashed, killing three service members off the country's eastern coast, officials said Monday.

"The transition to a US-led recovery operation after an extensive search and rescue operation by aircraft and ships comes with the acknowledgement that three Marines are still unaccounted for", Senator Payne said.

Senator Payne said underwater search operations would begin on Monday evening.

The HMAS Melville arrived in Shoalwater Bay, near Rockhampton, overnight to join a recovery operation after the tilt-rotor MV-22 Osprey plunged into the sea during a scheduled military exercise on Saturday.

The Royal Australian navy's clearance diving team completed an embark today aboard the hydrographic survey vessel Melville (A-246) to assist in recovery operations near the site where a Marine Corps V-22 Osprey entered the water August 5.

The Osprey aircraft were in Australia for a joint military training exercise held by the USA and Australia last month in Shoalwater Bay.

The commanding general of the III Marine Expeditionary Force, Lieutenant General Lawrence Nicholson, thanked the Australian Defence Force for their help in the recovery efforts.




Australian authorities said no Australian personnel were on board. -Australian joint military exercise that ended in late July.

"Operations have now shifted to recovery efforts". Rescue efforts were called called off Sunday and US officials were now calling the search a recovery effort.

A squadron of Ospreys is based at the Marines' Futenma base on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa.

Ryan Cross said his brother joined the Marines because he loved challenges and loved to fly.

Meanwhile, Japan's new defense minister told the United States military Monday of his "many concerns" about flights of the tilt-rotor aircraft in his country.
