With live-fire drill, China warns India not to test Beijing

The Chinese foreign ministry, the defence ministry, the Chinese embassy in India and the People's Daily have time and again urged India to withdraw its troops, failing which the People's Liberation Army would be forced to take action. As the world keeps a close watch amidst fears of the latest conflict between India and China boiling over into an all-out war, it is easy to forget that what is also at stake here is the sovereignty of an independent nation-Bhutan-caught in the crossfire.

Earlier, Federation of All Odisha Traders' Association (FAOTA) asked the public to boycott Chinese products as China would earn huge profit by selling its products in Indian market.

On June 18, over 270 Indian border troops, carrying weapons and driving two bulldozers, crossed the boundary in the Sikkim Sector and advanced more than 100 meters into Chinese territory to obstruct the road building of the Chinese side, causing tension in the area.

For almost 50 days now, soldiers from the Indian Army and the Chinese People's Liberation Army have been positioned on the Doklam plateau, reportedly just 150 feet away from each other.Beijing has responded belligerently to the issue, accusing India of entering Chinese territory (the area where the standoff is taking place is in fact disputed between China and Bhutan) and demanding a non-conditional withdrawal of Indian troops.

"It is a war with an obvious result", the editorial pronounced. "If the Modi government refuses to stop, it will push its country into a war that India has no power to control", it went on.

"The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be aware of the PLA's overwhelming firepower and logistics".

Indian and Chinese troops are involved in a tense face-off in the area for the past six weeks, but there have been no hostilities as yet. The neighbouring country, China has been holding India responsible for Sikkim standoff.

This article is published at a time when India's External Affairs Minister Shushma Suwraj told parliament that the clash between the two countries would not solve the problem and dialogue was the only way. "If a war spreads, the PLA is perfectly capable of annihilating all Indian troops in the border region".

India on Wednesday had reiterated that peace and tranquility along Indo-China border is an important prerequisite for smooth development of bilateral relations between the New Delhi and Beijing.

The editorial further said, "Modi government's hard line stance is sustained by neither laws nor strength. This administration is recklessly breaking worldwide norms and jeopardising India's national pride and peaceful development", the article said.

"We want to give peace a chance and allow India to recognize the grave consequences".

Hu said the military operation would aim to seize Indian personnel "illegally" lingering in Chinese territory or expel them.

According to a report in The Times of India, China's deputy chief of mission met his counterpart from Nepal in New Delhi in a courtesy call, during which China's stand on the issue was discussed.
