Traditional family households shrink to new low in Canada

Statistics Canada has released information from the 2016 Census regarding households and marital status.

In fact, in 15 years, the proportion of couples with at least one child has decreased by 5.6% to reach just above the 50 %.

Canadian families consisting of mom, dad and a couple of kids are now outnumbered by one-person households, according to census data released Wednesday that underscored a continued decline of "traditional" families.

Nova Scotia logged the highest proportion of children aged 0 to 14 living with a single parent at 26 per cent. Nearly 80% of lone-parent families are single-mother households. But, between 2006 and 2016, that increased by 60.7 per cent, compared with an increase of just 9.6 per cent for heterosexual unions. In raw numbers, there were 10,020 children aged 14 and under living with 8,770 same-sex couple parents on census day past year.

Between 2011 and 2016, the English-French bilingualism rate rose from 17.5 per cent to 18 per cent.

"We see the growth is faster in Ontario than in other parts of the country", said Chagnon. The proportion in Canada was also slightly higher than in the United Kingdom (20.0% in 2015), but lower than in France (22.6% in 2011), Norway (23.9% in 2011) and Sweden (29.0% in 2010).

When they do not live alone or in cohabitation, young adults are more likely to stay with their parents at least until the age of 34 years, notes Statistics Canada.

Nationally, the number of couples living in households without children grew faster than the number living with them.

Trends in the share of couples living with or without children also reflect the growing diversity of households and families in Canada. "Living with one's parents may have temporary benefits in terms of logistical, emotional or financial support while pursuing studies or finding full-time work", Statistics Canada said in a supplementary report, Young adults living with their parents 2016.

The ratio was 3.9% in Ontario and 3.6% in B.C., two provinces that are home to the bulk of Canada's immigrant population.

But more people living alone isn't necessarily all good. The steady rise in one-person households since 1951, when the proportion was just 7.4 percent, is due in part to the rise in working women and an aging population, Statistics Canada said.

In addition, higher separation and divorce rates have led to more people living alone instead of in couples.

The census defines "families" to include common law and married couples with or without children as well as lone-parent families.

More people than ever are learning Aboriginal languages.

This is higher than both the national and provincial numbers. During that same period, the percentage of people in that age group living with a family of their own fell from 49.1 per cent to 41.9 per cent. For example, income redistribution, pensions and the increased presence of women in the workforce have led to more people being economically independent today than in the past, especially in older age groups.

"It's very important for me to live with them. they are the most important people in my life and I am the only child", said Jiang, a producer for a Mandarin radio show.

At the time of Confederation few people lived alone, and the vast majority of households were family households.

"My parents are getting older, we are sensitive to each other's needs and to help each other, not only in life, but also in psychology".
