Explosion injures 6 at Minneapolis school

The school described Carlson, 82, as its "biggest cheerleader". Two were releasedwhile four others are listed to be in serious condition. Another employee was still unaccounted for as of 6 p.m. Wednesday. "If this had been the school year, oh my God, it would have been awful".

Minnehaha Academy recent graduate Ashley Mullen, 18, said Berg was a "friendly face - anyone who called the school would go to her".

- He said the active search for the second missing person is a rescue at this point, not a recovery.

Neither person has been identified though Minneapolis Fire said that both the person who died and the missing person are both school staff members.

Their blast-related injuries ranged from head trauma and broken bones to cuts and scrapes.

Minnehaha Academy is a private Christian school in south Minneapolis, with students from preschool through 12th grade.

The Minneapolis Fire Department said that the cause of the explosion appears to have been related to natural gas.

The explosion was caused by a natural gas leak as contractors were doing work on the building, officials said.

Investigators confirmed gas work near the boiler was being done at the time.

All students at the school's summer program were safe. School was scheduled to start August 23 for all grades.

Three people were initially reported as missing but one person was found around noon, uninjured. Meskan said he and other people who rushed to help found a man pinned under the rubble. She also said there were faculty from the school in the area of the explosion and that their condition was unknown.

All parts of the school that hadn't collapsed were inspected and cleared, Tyner said. "It was just a really loud boom", one resident told KARE 11. The explosion affected only the upper school; the lower and middle school campus is about a mile and a half away.

"It sounded like a freight door shutting". VIDEO: Aftermath of explosion at Minnesota school " We just started digging", Meskan said.

"He'd always talk to you in between classes and he would always offer you Dilly bars", student Roddy Macdonald said, according to Fox 9. He wouldn't confirm to The Associated Press that company workers were on site, saying: "We are trying to figure it out".

The NTSB, the United States' premier civil transportation investigative agency, said it will investigate the explosion.

- He said two people unaccounted for are believed to be under the rubble.

The explosion happened Wednesday morning at the Minnehaha Academy.

- Police say five people were transported to the hospital and one was evaluated and released at the scene.

All of those injured were adults according to the chief.

Officials said the building sustained "heavy, heavy damage" and said the front walls were blown out and the roof collapsed. Multiple people are trapped beneath the collapse.

Originally, the Minneapolis Fire Department reported one fatality.

"This is a deep, deep loss for us", she said.

Statement from Master Mechanical, the contractors working at #minnehahaacademy when gas line was hit.

"My office is in continuous contact with the City of Minneapolis and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, as emergency personnel respond to this emergency". This only affects the Upper School. "We were prepared for a lot more injuries".

- Philip Day says he and his daughter were inside the building during the explosion.
