Teenager opens plane's emergency exit and slides down wing

San Francisco: A 17-year-old passenger swung open an emergency exit on Tuesday and jumped from an aeroplane onto the runway at San Francisco International Airport.

The 17-year-old, a United States citizen, removed the door minutes after the Copa Airlines flight arrived from Central America, San Francisco Airport spokesman Doug Yakel said. The teen was a male US citizen, airport spokesman Doug Yakel told CBS in San Francisco.

No other flights were affected, Yakel said.

Witnesses said it was a typical landing until the emergency door opened and the plane filled with sunlight.

Matt Crowder, of Athernon, tells San Jose television station KNTV (http://bit.ly/2uU68k2) people sitting near the exit row stood up when the boy jumped out and started to shout.

"We just landed and then I hear some people scream ... like, 'No!'" 11-year-old passenger Andrea Sepulveda Guzman told CBS News.

The teen, who has not been identified, opened the emergency exit over the wing and jumped out of the plane before he started running away on the tarmac.

He has been detained for questioning by police and will be transported to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Passenger Isaac Rodrigues said they were all told to remain on the plane for over an hour as police dealt with the situation.

The airline says it is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation. The teen was a passenger on a Boeing 737 from Panama City. The plane went to the assigned gate and all the passengers were de-boarded safely.

The incident occurred at the airport in San Francisco.
