Award-winning French actress Jeanne Moreau dies at 89

Jeanne Moreau, an actress inextricably linked to the rise of French New Wave cinema and who ascended to become one of her country's most revered performers, has died.

Moreau, who won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for Seven Days. She would subsequently work with Francois Truffaut (Jules and Jim, The Bride Wore Black), Michelangelo Antonioni (La note), Luis Buñuel (Diary of a Chambermaid), Roger Vadim (Les Liaisons dangereuses), Rainer Werner Fassbinder (Querelle), Elia Kazan (The Last Tycoon), and Orson Welles (The Trial, Chimes at Midnight). According to the information from Closer, the woman of the household of Jeanne Moreau found his lifeless body at his home located on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris.

She has been called the "Grand Dame of French New Wave" and has been credited with being a rebel on and off the screen.

In this 1962 photo, Jeanne Moreau poses for a photo at London airport, shortly after her arrival from Paris.

Jeanne Moreau was one of those actresses iconic. "Most people don't have the energy for passion, so they give up and go to the movies".

She began her film career with a role in Dernier Amour.

The French actress took on dual stage roles for the 1953 play "L'Heure eblouissante" ("The Dazzling Hour") after her co-star became ill.

In a loving tribute, John Waters remembers serving with her on the jury at Cannes, and later inviting her to the French screening of his 2004 film A Dirty Shame, which Moreau called "pure poetry".

She had a son, Jerome, in 1949 from her first marriage to Jean-Louis Richard. When she told her father about her ambition, he slapped her.

French president Emmanuel Macron tweeted of Moreau, "A legend of cinema and theater ... an actress engaged in the whirlwind of life with an absolute freedom". "I would like to have a really big house", she said in 1965, "where I could live with a man I loved, and where there'd be enough space for every man I'd ever loved in the past to have a room to himself, and we'd all live there together".

Actress Helen Mirren shared a similar sentiment, posting a black and white photo of a young Moreau on her Instagram page which she captioned: "The bold and attractive icon". Sorry, Jeanne, but this is beyond us.

Moreau had a prolific career and continued acting into her 80s.

Said the actress herself, in an interview with Film Comment magazine, "I was at that age where one lives very egocentrically".
