Essentially, the redesigned engine, the 10-speed automatic transmission and the Drag Strip Mode work in unison to provide the fancy acceleration numbers.

However, to drop below 4 seconds to motorway speeds, you need the new 10-speed automatic gearbox. With the V6 engine being removed from the option list, the 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cylinder is now the base engine and these power levels make the 2018 base model Mustang the most powerful entry level model ever.

Drag Strip mode is available on manual-transmission Mustangs too, but if you're looking for the quickest acceleration, get the automatic.

More impressive performance numbers also trickle down to the EcoBoost four-cylinder, which retains its 310 horsepower rating, but sees torque increase by 30 pound-feet to 350. The engine's 460 horsepower and 420 lb. -ft. of torque represent improvements over the current model's 435 horsepower and 400 lb. -ft. In the case of the Blue Oval's latest V8-engined pony vehicle, that feat would be to attain 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) from a standing start, which the company says is quicker than the base Porsche 911 Carrera. With Drag Strip and the Performance Package, it'll hit 60mph in 5-seconds.

Ford's most advanced and powerful Mustang GT is also the fastest ever, achieving 0-to-60-mph in less than four seconds in Drag Strip mode. The Drag Strip mode setting optimizes torque, and transmission to achieve the new acceleration, and hits that sub-four second time when paired with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires on the auto. "You get peak engine torque and horsepower straight through thanks to our new Ford-built 10-speed transmission", Mustang chief engineer Carl Widmann said in a statement.

Believe it or not, the Ford Mustang GT is faster than a real BMW M model.

What is more surprising is the fact that 2018 Ford Mustang GT likely keeps up with the Continental GT Speed version. The 10-speed architecture features Ford-patented power-flow and Ford-patented direct-acting hydraulic controls. It's uniquely tuned for all 5 drive modes-Normal, Sport, Track, Drag Strip and Snow/wet.

"Gearing matters, and in Drag Strip mode this auto launches better than ever off the line", Widmann boasts.
