Controversial Nelson Mandela final days book shelved 'out of respect' for family

The book reveals several undignified episodes at the end of Mandela's life as well as bitter family squabbles over his care and legacy.

Mandela's widow, Graca Machel, said she is considering legal action and will consult with the executors of Mandela's will, South African media reported.

On Monday afternoon, PRHSA withdrew the book.

The book, penned by Durban-born Dr Vejay Ramlakan and detailing some of Mandela's final moments has sparked debate around doctor-patient confidentiality.

No Mandela family spokesperson was available for comment.

"The views and patient-doctor engagements expressed in the book have not been sanctioned", SANDF spokesman Siphiwe Dlamini said.

He also wrote that an ambulance transporting him from his Johannesburg home to Pretoria, during his final months, caught fire on the highway forcing the former president to wait half an hour for another ambulance. While Ramlakan declined to say which family members had given permission for the book, his remarks could indicate continuing rifts in a family whose members have feuded over the years on issues such as inheritance.

When asked whether Machel had been consulted in the writing of the book, Ramlakan refused to be drawn.

The surgeon also gave chilling details about Mandela's health condition during his last days.

"The story of Madiba's last years is actually, in a sense, more impressive than when he was a fit human being", he added, paying tribute to his "unconquerable fortitude".

"Penguin Random House South Africa (PRHSA) has made a decision to immediately withdraw the book Mandela's Last Years from the trade, and no further copies will be issued", it said in a statement issued by Surita Joubert on behalf of PRHSA.

Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison for opposing white minority rule, became South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994. We want to assure Mama Nosizwe (Graca Machel) that she is not alone in taking offence at the apparent violation of Nkosi Dalibhunga's privacy.

Mandela, often known by his clan name Madiba, died on December 5, 2013.
