Mercedes X-Class Unveiled, Looks To Upstage The VW Amarok

And as mentioned earlier, Mercedes-Benz hasn't announced whether or not the truck will eventually come to the USA, however, given that Mercedes-Benz once said it wasn't going to bring the G500 4×4 2, and then did, it's more than likely we see some version of the X-Class here in the future.

Daimler anticipates that demand for mid-sized trucks will grow by 43 per cent over the next decade to around 3.2 million units. Mercedes-Benz is yet to reveal Australian pricing with further details expected before the X220d and X250d launch in early 2018, with the X350d to follow later in the year.

Prices for the first pick-up offered by a premium brand start at 37,294 Euros (£32,995) in Mercedes-Benz's native Germany, where the X-Class will make its on-sale debut. The top-of-the-line V6 diesel will be available from mid-2018.

This post is being updated. Rear-wheel drive will come standard on most models but all-wheel drive will also be available. Customers can choose between a rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive and a six speed manual or a seven speed automatic transmission.

Depending on drivetrain options, the X-Class offers a maximum towing capacity of 7716 lbs, but every X-Class offers 2230 lbs of payload capacity.

"The new X-class finds the ideal balance between the stylish design expected of a Mercedes-Benz and the uncompromising robustness and functionality demanded of the category", says Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia and New Zealand managing director, Diane Tarr.

With Audio 20 CD and COMAND Online multimedia systems, and in addition to the central control unit, the X-Class also contains the multifunction touchpad familiar from the passenger vehicle model series.

The interior doesn't live up to the luxurious X-Class concepts but it comes equipped a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, circular air vents, and a 5.4-inch display in the instrument cluster.

Three equipment levels are offered: Pure, Progressive, and Power.

Also available is a 163bhp petrol engine for the X 200 spec.

Likewise, permanent all-wheel drive will be available as an option from next year, along with a locking differential on the rear axle, somewhat boosting the X-Class's credibility.

It will, however, be the Europeans who will first be able to own an X-class, with the vehicle set for introduction to this market in November.
