Ataribox May Be the Company's SNES Classic or Its Ouya

Last month video game company #Atari and their CEO Fred Chesnais teased that the company was releasing a new console.

But now we predict one of three fates, none of which are pleasant: a rushed, no good console; a belated console with production issues; or an announcement in a few months time that the whole project has been dropped. The Ataribox will bring back classic Atari games in a new designed box with HDMI port, 4 USB ports and a SD Card slot.

In an email sent this morning to Atari fans, the company revealed: "our objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari".

When Atari announced it was jumping back into the game-console arena, those old enough to remember the 8-bit glory days of the Atari 2600 - like myself - perked up, briefly lighting up whatever part of the brain responsible for feelings of nostalgia.

Ataribox

Atari isn't talking specs, games, pricing or timeframes yet, and only notes that it has "lots of milestones, challenges and decision points" ahead.

There's not a ton of detail yet, so we're still waiting on release date, price and a list of games. At first, everyone just assumed that Atari was following Nintendo's footsteps and releasing their own version of the NES Classic, but today's first look at the upcoming hardware says that Atari's not just going retro. Atari, of course, did not spill the beans on every little detail because this console is still a ways off. You can see the wood version in the image above, while the red and black version can be seen below. We also don't know the actual specs of the hardware but hopefully more will be revealed soon. That probably means we're still looking much more at a concept than a stable product, and who knows where any of it will land.

We'll keep you updated on the veracity of this detail. Unlike Nintendo's hugely successful NES Classic Edition, this machine includes an SD-card reader, which suggests owners will be able to load up games of their own and possibly buy more from some sort of online marketplace. What do you think about this new console by Atari?
