US Women's Open: South Korea's Park Sung-hyun wins major

The 23-year-old South Korean fired a 5-under-par 67 onthe 6,762-yard Old Course at Trump National Golf Club to win the 72nd edition of the oldest major championship in women's golf.

With two holes remaining, Park shared the lead with Choi, a 17-year-old from South Korean who was attempting to become the youngest-ever victor of the premier title in women's golf, and just the second amateur to win the championship, joining 1967 victor Catherine Lacoste.

While Choi - who is also from South Korea - played in the group behind and at one stage held a share of the lead, before her tee-shot at the par-3 16 found water and led to a disappointing double bogey. She was tied with Feng at 8 under after 15 holes, but bogeyed two of her next three holes to fall back. The Chinese player's triple bogey on the last hole sent her tumbling from second to fifth place.

Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko made a great comeback in her second round at the U.S. women's Open this morning in New Jersey after a poor start on the front nine in Bedminster, New Jersey. Choi fell just short of becoming only the second amateur to win the championship in its 72 years of existence following then 22-year-old Catherine Lacoste of France, who hoisted the trophy 50 years ago.

Park Sung-Hyun was fourth on 210 with world number one Ryu So-Yeon, Lee Mi-Rim and Lee Jeong-Eun6 all on 211. "It's easy in practice, it's a little bit more hard in competition and it's the toughest you could actually have when it actually means something".

Seon Woo Bae, a victor in South Korea past year, was alone in fifth place at 5 under after a 69.

Park needed a fine chip from over the green on the par-five 18th hole to save par and win the $US900,000 ($1.1 million) top prize from the $US5 million ($6.4 million) event. Her total of 279 beat the old amateur record, set by Grace Park in 1999, by four strokes.

"I'm happy about my result because coming into this week I had no expectations at all", she said.

She goes by the nickname Dak Gong, coined by South Korean fans that translates into "just shut your mouth and attack", she said through an interpreter after starting the final round three back and winning her first major by two shots.

The USGA was criticized for not moving the event from Trump National after comments made by the president about women came to light during the election campaign.

"Particularly today, my caddie had a great role helping me stay focused", Park said.

Choi was the story for most of the day. Choi fell out of contention with a rough double bogey on No. 16.

"This tournament for me, even if I could just come and play, that alone would be an honor, but on top of that. I think that's where the tournament was won or lost". "She stood right in front of me and said, 'I am so proud of you, Sung Hyun.' At that moment, it really dawned on me, I guess I really won the championship".
