Dodt happily swaps NY for Open at Birkdale

Overnight leaders Andrew Dodt and Ian Poulter struggled to maintain form during the final day's play, with Dodt carding a one-over par 73 and Poulter a shot further adrift to end up 7-under for the tournament. Poulter may yet head for Birkdale and the third major of 2017 with what would be a first European Tour win in nearly five years under his belt.

Shinkwin, an unheralded Englishman ranked No. 405, left western Scotland with a spot in next week's British Open and the belief that he can compete with the game's best players.

McCarron got into contention with four straight birdies on the front nine and finished with eight straight pars.

Rafa Cabrera Bello claimed victory in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open on the first extra hole of a play-off against Callum Shinkwin at Dundonald Links; he had earlier carded a magnificent final round 8-under-par 32-32=64 for a 72-hole total of 13-under 275.

"I'm over the moon", Dodt said.

"I'm absolutely pumped to be playing in my first major. I mean, in the play-off, I really gave it a go and extremely pleased it worked out for me".

Forget the flight across "The Pond" to the Big Apple, it's now all roads to Royal Birkdale for Queenslander Andrew Dodt. Up the fairway, said birdie would be nice but par should be good.

Also on eight under were Irishman Padraig Harrington, who bounced back from his 79 on Saturday with a six-under 66, American Matt Kuchar (69) and New Zealand's Ryan Fox. It must have been frustrating for him because I felt he got unlucky with the ball not rolling back to the bunker.

The result is Dodt's sixth top-0o in his 26 Tour events this year and, in some way, makes amends for last May's disappointment in leading going into the final round of the BMW PGA Championship but only to finish in a share of sixth on the famed "Burma Road" course.

"It's all a learning curve and obviously if you win, you have to have luck on your side".

"Of course I was nervous but to be fair it was nothing like what everyone probably thinks". "I just couldn't get the line and the speed together". "I played great yesterday and today".

Rob Oppenheim, who was tied with Jacques Blaauw through three rounds, missed a birdie chip on No. 18 with an opportunity to force a playoff with Garnett.

Paul Dunne registered two birdies and four bogeys in a closing 74 to finish equal 26th on four under so he too misses out on next week's third major of the season.
