Strong winds cause for concern in and around wildfire-ravaged areas

There are now 167 active fires across BC, and though none of the largest fires threatening homes in Ashcroft, Williams Lake, Little Fort, 100 Mile House and Quesnel are fully contained, Skrepnek says crews have made some progress. An evacuation alert was issued Saturday for the Clisbako area. Controlled burns allow for the fuel to burn in a controlled setting before fires potentially move to the areas, due to wind.

There are more than 160 fires burning, with 14 posing a direct threat on communities, Skrepnek said.

Cobb said he believes everyone left in Williams Lake would follow evacuations orders, adding that anyone who stays behind risks the lives of firefighters who may be called in to save people from burning homes.

The province is reminding evacuees to register with the Canadian Red Cross and, if they need lodging or food, to register at emergency social services reception centres as well.

Since the fire season began in April, more than 616 blazes have consumed 1,140 square kilometres of land, forcing officials to order evacuations affecting 16,680 people.

Richmond said he told a meeting of evacuees on Thursday night that efforts were underway to restore some normality in fire-weary communities.

People in the Loon Lake area of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District were ordered to evacuate the area, and an evacuation alert was issued for the Village of Clinton on Friday.

"Unfortunately, significant rain continues to elude the southern half of the province for the foreseeable future", Environment Canada says.

The Gustafsen North wildfire near 100 Mile House is 5,000 hectares and 20 percent contained. IfdsZt is coming from the larger fires in the Kamloops and Cariboo regions. Anyone going into the backcountry is urged to use extreme caution, especially if operating off-road vehicles as their exhaust systems can and do start forest fires.

For now, there are no imminent evacuation orders in our region, despite some active fires, but everyone must remain vigilant in this regard.
