Iran Urges US to Reconsider Negative Approach towards Nuclear Deal

"We expect all the sides to abide by their commitments, but the USA has remained committed to the agreement at the least level", Zarif said upon arrival in NY to participate in the meeting of the High-Level Political Forum 2017 in the United Nations headquarters, Xinhua reported. Trump has a congressionally mandated deadline of Monday to decide.

More than three dozen former U.S. generals and admirals have written a letter to President Donald Trump in support of the Iranian nuclear deal, highlighting the success of the agreement and the Islamic Republic's compliance with the terms, as Tehran argues that the policy is inefficient. The Trump administration plans to certify that Iran is in compliance with the nuclear agreement.

"The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) proved that followers of the policy of pressure have finally realized its inefficiency, therefore, the United States should also reconsider its approach towards the agreement", Zarif said upon his arrival at the airport in New York Thursday afternoon local time (early Friday morning in Tehran).

However, the Iranian minister has no meeting scheduled with USA officials.

"I think at the end of the day, everybody will see that the agreement will represent an outcome that was the best possibility for all concerned [parties]", he pointed out.

The landmark 2015 deal struck with Iran by the US, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany is aimed at preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon by imposing time-limited restrictions and strict global monitoring on its nuclear programme. "I plan to meet not with USA officials, but with members of the wider intellectual community that have impact on USA policy-making".

The foreign minister said Iran has been "in the forefront of fighting terrorism and extremism in the region" and expressed satisfaction over the fact that the people and governments of Iraq and Syria have succeeded in retaking their territories. One more step - and there will be military actions.
