Queen Elizabeth Welcomes Spain's Queen Letizia to England

The three-day visit by King Felipe VI and his wife, Queen Letizia, came amid a brewing dispute about what Brexit means for the future of Gibraltar, a tiny British territory at the tip of the Iberian peninsula.

On Wednesday, Queen Elizabeth II greeted Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia for the kick-off of their first-ever state visit.

The pair, who will meet at May's Downing Street residence on the second day of the three-day, pomp-laden state visit, are also likely to discuss the issue of European Union citizen's rights post-Brexit.

It is the first state visit by a Spanish king to the United Kingdom since Felipe's father King Juan Carlos made the trip 31 years ago.

Following Brexit, the row between London and Madrid over Gibraltar's sovereignty intensified further after Brussels claimed it would give Spain the chance to veto any EU-UK deal once Britain severs ties with the bloc.

Hundreds of thousands of Britons live in Spain, and a similar number of Spaniards live in the UK, King Felipe told MP and peers. King Felipe and Queen Letizia received a Ceremonial welcome.

The pair married and Princess Victoria Eugenie became Queen Ena of Spain, making King Felipe a descendant of Queen Victoria.

Flags of Commonwealth nations were displayed at Horse Guards Parade. The event will also likely be Prince Philip's final public dinner, as his retirement from public duties will go into effect this fall.

The King and Queen of Spain enjoyed a private lunch with the British Royal Family inside Buckingham Palace today - where they were served Laureate's Choice - a sherry selected by poet Carol Ann Duffy. The Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Letizia travelled in a separate carriage.

The royal couple - who have two daughters - are expected to meet Prince Harry and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge this evening when they are feted with the grand state banquet in the ballroom.

A total of more than 1,000 troops are expected to take part in the state visit.

On Thursday, he will accompany the royal visitors to Westminster Abbey.
