Man Killed By Takata Airbag While Working On A Honda

The expanded recall comes one day after Honda confirmed the 12th US death - and 17th worldwide - tied to a faulty Takata air bag.

Honda confirmed on Monday that a man died in June 2016 when an inflator ruptured while he was working inside a 2001 Honda Accord using a hammer.

According to The Detroit News, a man was performing an unknown fix inside a 2001 Honda Accord past year when the airbag deployed.

"It is hard to determine whether the cause of death in this incident was the inflator rupture, or an interaction of the hammer with the deploying airbag", Honda said. The company has not been able to inspect the vehicle and is relying on police photos to make its determination, Honda spokesman Chris Martin said.

The death from the faulty inflator brings the USA total to 12 and the worldwide total to 17. Of the approximately 29 million cars affected by the Takata recall, some with the most unsafe types of inflators are said to be Hondas and Acuras from the early 2000s, including the 2001-2002 Accord and Civic.

The problem touched off the largest automotive recall in US history involving up to 69 million inflators and 42 million vehicles. Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman, said in an email the company learned of the incident through a legal claim in March.

In January, Takata pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges related to its handling of the air bag defects and agreed to pay a US$1 billion (S$1.39 billion) fine. The OEM noted that 12 recall notices were sent since 2009 to the Accord's registered owners.

"It is hard to determine whether the cause of death in this incident was the inflator rupture, or an interaction of the hammer with the deploying airbag", Honda wrote Monday. Laboratory tests show they have as high as a 50 percent chance of blowing apart in a crash.

Honda says its "records indicate that the recall fix was never completed on this vehicle".

Records did indicate that the Honda in question hadn't received service for the inflator recall, despite numerous notifications.

Scott Caudill, chief operating officer of TK Holdings, Takata's United States unit, said in a court affidavit last month in its bankruptcy filing that the company "faces insurmountable claims" relating to the recalls and owes billions of dollars to automakers.

Green, who teaches at Harvard, has served as a mediator in many major cases, including the US Microsoft antitrust case, and now serves as a Justice Department monitor overseeing the implementation of billions of dollars in consumer relief linked to settlements with banks stemming from the 2007-2009 financial crisis.
