Pakistan probe panel puts Sharif, family in the dock

A corruption case in the Panama Papers case should be filed against Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and his two sons Hussain and Hassan, suggests JIT ( Joint Investigation Team) that is looking into the assets of one of the most powerful family in Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference, Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal denounced the JIT's report as "Imran Nama".

The report consist of the details of grilling sessions with members of Sharif family including the statements of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his brother Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, children Hassan, Hussain and Maryam Nawaz Sharif, son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar, cousin Tariq Shafi, and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, besides other relevant witnesses.

Qatari Prince declined to appear before the JIT team in Pakistan rather the prince instead asked the JIT to record his statement at his palace in Qatar.

Sharif's party leaders, meanwhile, said that the report did not prove any specific wrongdoing on the part of the prime minister.

Iqbal, while announcing that his party will challenge the report before the apex court, said, "We not only condemn this report but will completely expose and unveil its contradictions and falsification before the Supreme Court".

"There exists a significant disparity between the wealth declared by the respondents and the means through which the respondents had generated income from known or declared sources", the report said, according to a partial copy released to reporters.

The Supreme Court had taken up the matter after it was petitioned by the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party regarding disclosures in the Panama Papers leaks about offshore assets owned by Sharif's three children. Several assets have raised eyebrows which include four flats that cost million pounds in Park Lane, London, United Kingdom.

The JIT report may not be as damaging for the ruling family as they are anticipating.

The JIT panel interrogated seven members of the Sharif family, including the Pakistan PM. "We hope the Supreme Court bench will send this report into the trash bin ... to where it rightfully belongs", he concluded.
