Uran wins crash-filled stage, Froome keeps yellow

Welshman Thomas, second in the general classification to team-mate Chris Froome, crashed on the descent of the Col de la Biche - the first of three Hors category climbs on Sunday.

He beat France's Warren Barguil (Team Sunweb) after a photo finish.

In addition, Australian Richie Porte's Tour came to an end after he suffered a heavy crash on a descent.

Geraint Thomas was sitting in a Sky team vehicle, his shoulder wrapped in gauze, wondering if his 2017 season is cursed.

He careered across the road and clattered into Ireland's Dan Martin, bringing the two crashing into the rocky side of the road in the final 25km of the 181.5km stage from Nantua to Chambery. Organizers said he was conscious and speaking.

Froome suffered a mechanical problem on the way up the Mont du Chat, the last of three hors categorie climbs on the day, and as the three-time Tour victor was calling for the team vehicle Aru attacked in a clear breach of cycling's protocol. "We hope both guys are both okay", said Froome's Sky team on Twitter. The last descent of the day with seven climbs saw a terrifying high-speed crash involving Richie Porte, who had been fifth overall but is now out of the race. "What was important, he was always conscious, he knew what happened". "I want to thank the other riders, who did not attack".

After picking himself up, Martin finished in a group including Movistar's Nairo Quintana and Orica-Scott's Simon Yates, one minute and 15 seconds behind the leaders. I've just seen the images of Richie Porte's crash and that leaves you with a frightful feeling. "I managed to catch the group in front of me after I crashed the second time - I was flying down the mountain", he said with a smile. He is now eighth overall, a massive 2:13 off the pace.

Italian Fabio Aru replaced Thomas in second place going into Monday's first rest day.
