Alaskans not alarmed about North Korea threat

Following the successful North Korean ICBM test earlier in the week, the United States has announced its intention to carry out a new test of their THAAD missile defense system, an attempt to shoot down an IRBM simulating an attack around the THAADs in Alaska.

Robert Church, 45, told the British newspaper he is skeptical of North Korean claims of a "successful" intercontinental ballistic missile test.

The THAAD interceptors will be fired from Alaska, Reuters reported.

The THAAD is based at the Pacific Spaceport Complex Alaska in Kodiak, Alaska.

The officials, on the condition of anonymity, released the nature and test timing of the THAAD.

The test is designated as Flight Test THAAD (FTT)-18.

Asked on Friday about acquiring a missile defence system, Mr Turnbull said the Australia's focus was on protecting deployed forces in the field and that the answer to the North Korean threat was the denuclearisation of North Korea.

After North Korea's latest missile test, Trump tweeted out a call for Japan, South Korea and China to stand up to the country. This year's United States deployment of THAAD in South Korea to guard against North Korea's shorter-range missiles has also drawn fierce criticism from China, which says the system's powerful radar can probe deep into its territory.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Moscow on July 4 and issued a joint statement calling for a common peace plan for the Korean peninsula, and condemning.militarization in the region.

THAAD's success rate in testing is far higher than the one for America's Ground-based Midcourse Defence system (GMD), the system specifically created to shoot down an ICBM headed for the U.S. mainland. "I'm concerned about the threat, but I don't have a lot of confidence in the North Korea scientists making a functional rocket that could reach Alaska".

Mr Rudd's comments referred to the need for a system that would protect population centres such as Darwin - which is now potentially within range of North Korea's missiles - rather than the systems Mr Turnbull referred to.

Earlier in the day, speaking at an informal meeting of the leaders of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) nations on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed similar concerns.

India urged North Korea from refraining from such action.
