Escaped SC inmate captured in Texas

Officials are working to get Causey back here as soon as possible.

Causey, 46, escaped this week from Lieber Correctional Institution, about 90 miles (149 km) southeast of Columbia.

State corrections officials were offering up to $2,000, with additional money coming from South Carolina Crimestoppers, for Causey's apprehension.

His latest escaped happened in broad daylight.

"We 100 percent know that a cell phone was used, or multiple cell phones were used while he was incarcerated", South Carolina Department of Corrections director Bryan Stirling told ABC News 4.

Causey was serving life sentences in the Liebert Correctional Institution in Ridgeville, about 48 km northeast of Charleston, for holding a Columbia lawyer and his family at gunpoint in their home in 2004. He also urged the federal government to get involved and establish laws to prevent future similar prison breaks. It is believed he used a cell phone to orchestrate his escape and possibly a drone delivered the contraband.

Causey had escaped from a Columbia prison in 2005 and was caught three days later.

It's not the first time drones were deployed in a bid to assist escapes or to drop drugs, porn, and cigarettes to inmates.

He was found with a two guns, four cell phones, and over $47,000.

Authorities continued to search Thursday for an inmate who has made his second escape from a maximum-security SC prison.

"No longer are people stopped from continuing their criminal ways from behind bars". "The next thing they're going to do is drones". "So what do we do next?" SC has been moving away from a reliance on lockup since at least 2014, when the state settled a lawsuit over the treatment of mentally ill inmates.

In 2010, a veteran SC correctional officer survived being shot six times at his home after officials say an inmate planned the shooting and used an illegal cellphone to coordinate with the shooter.

Keel said federal prison officials are allowed to block cell phones but state officials are not. Any change is opposed by the cellphone industry, out of concern it could lead to wider gaps in their networks.

According to our sources, corrections officials were warned six months ago that Causey was planning another jailbreak - and still couldn't stop him.
