Must-read: European prayer vigil launched for Charlie Gard

The Vatican issued a statement Sunday that said the Pope felt the parents should be allowed to "accompany and treat their child until the end".

But last week, after a series of escalating legal appeals, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the hospital can discontinue life support for the baby, who has been in the intensive care unit since October. Charlie's parents had asked European court judges in France to consider their case after the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court in the United Kingdom ruled in favour of GOSH doctors.

Charlie's parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard from Bedfont, west London, have spent the last days of their son's life with him, after being given more time before his life-support is turned off. His doctors wish to take him off life support, but his parents disagree.

U.S. President Donald Trump has also expressed his intention to help the family, and White House officials have reportedly spoken with the family to offer support.

Not having time to investigate into "who was right" doctors, family, court etc, we prayed for the child and his family and my conscience said to me ' if you don't speak out, who should?'

The pair discussed the case of Charlie, who has been at the centre of a lengthy legal battle involving his parents and doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), during a phone call, the Foreign Office said.

The Prime Minister's comments came after USA president Donald Trump and the Pope tweeted their support for the boy, who has been at the centre of a lengthy legal battle involving his parents and doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

But the U.K.'s top death panel has been affirmed by the so-called "European Court of Human Rights", which is apparently some kind of worldwide death panel that convenes in Strasbourg, France, but reserves the right to sentence children everywhere to die.

Trump tweeted his support for Charlie Gard, a 10-month-old infant on life support due to complications from a mitochondrial disease. Enoc said Yates "appears set to stop at nothing" after a British court ordered her son's treatment to be stopped.

Chris Gard and Charlotte Yates have raised millions in order to try a last-chance treatment in the USA which could potentially save their son.

The specialist, who can not be named for legal reasons, said therapy would provide a "small chance" of a meaningful improvement in Charlie's brain function.

The ruling to end Charlie's life support, against the parents' wishes, brought reactions from around the world.

"He is praying for them, in the hope that their desire to accompany and care for their own child until the end will be respected", the statement said.

The Vatican has weighed in, saying "we must do what advances the health of the patient, but we must also accept the limits of medicine" and "avoid aggressive medical procedures that are disproportionate to any expected results or excessively burdensome to the patient or the family". The parents said that the hospital did not allow them to take Charlie home.
