Amazon, Apple, Google stock prices go haywire due to data glitch

Erroneous prices of Nasdaq stocks, including some of the world's biggest technology companies, flooded traders' screens after the U.S. market shut early Monday before a holiday.

Nasdaq told Business Insider that the problem was caused by "certain third parties" incorrectly interpreting test data as a live feed. Some providers such as Yahoo Finance, Google Finance, and Bloomberg LP showed the fake changes in share prices.

And with markets closed for the 4 July holiday, there'll be no impact on trading, BBC reported. However, the early close on Monday may have played a role in dissemination of test data, which is sent out after every trading day, the Nasdaq spokesman said, according to the Wall Street Journal. Even the slightest of hiccups can set off a chain of events that cause an upset, as the global stock market discovered on Tuesday this week.

As part of a normal process it carries out, the UTP distributed its test data that was improperly circulated by certain third parties and Nasdaq now is working with those third-party vendors in an attempt to resolve this matter, said a spokesperson for Nasdaq late Monday night.

Meanwhile, Alphabet (parent company of Google) and eBay shares were priced at $123.47.

No trades were executed at the erroneous prices, and the actual prices of the stocks were not affected. "Nasdaq is working with third party vendors to resolve the matter", the spokesman said. "Bloomberg and a few other providers improperly disseminated test data".
