Pelosi defends leadership following special election loss

Pelosi said she didn't want to hear Republicans "all of a sudden be sanctimonious" as if they had "never seen such a thing before". "I thrive on competition".

Rep. Filemon Vela (D., Texas) said Thursday on Fox News that for Democrats to reclaim the House in 2018, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) must go. Democrats need to gain 24 seats to win the majority.

In the Georgia election, Republicans used a tactic they've been using for years, setting up the liberal Pelosi as a villain who needs to be stopped.

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, is among the leaders of that group.

"We'd better take a good, long, strong look in the mirror and realize that the problem is us, it's the party". Pelosi has helped engineer budget deals, an overhaul of the nation's health care law and an economic stimulus during her years as a leader. After she was re-elected Democratic leader, the Republican National Committee unfurled a banner that read "Hire Pelosi" outside its headquarters.

Pelosi said Republicans will always make a target of Democratic leaders, saying they did so with legendary former House Speaker Tip O'Neill and many others.

"I'm a master legislator, I am a strategic, politically astute leader, my leadership is recognized by many around the country, and that is why I'm able to attract the support that I do, which is essential to our election, sad to say", Pelosi said at the press conference. "I don't think anybody's fighting back".

But with Republicans re-energized after the Georgia win, they're praying she doesn't go anywhere anytime soon. And on Thursday, she revealed that she's considered passing the torch on multiple occasions. Apparently these mostly Republican voters remain willing to choose the Trump-backing GOP devil they know over the Democratic devil they don't, even if they don't like Trump himself.

But out of all the GOP candidates who have won in four special elections so far this year, Handel was the only one who actually overperformed the president.

"If there's a path to the Democratic Party regaining control of the House, it starts in California", the newly elected state Democratic chairman, Eric Bauman, told the New York Times.

It's disturbing to see Democrats attacking Nancy Pelosi like Donald Trump is. There has been no significant disruption of the Democratic party's leadership or strategy since November, and Republicans are finding they can run against that leadership and strategy head on and notch win after win. The end result was that by the time early voting concluded last Friday, 36,000 additional people had voted.

"Maybe they don't want to play in the arena, but I'm very proud of the members who do". Years later, it was Pelosi, Obama and then-top Senate Democrat Harry Reid. They called for any changes to the House-passed Obamacare replacement to be made public for at least 72 hours and be subject to a Congressional Budget Office analysis of the bill's budgetary, coverage and cost implications.

"I love the fray". 'No, that's not fair, ' Rice said. "We need to move forward and we need to get a new leadership team in place, '" Rice said.

The frustrated Democrats met in Rice's office a day earlier to discuss their options as they face long odds of knocking out the woman who has led the Democratic caucus for almost 15 years from minority to majority and back, raised tens of millions of dollars and has had multiple legislative successes.
