Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho accused of tax evasion in Spain

In a statement, the state prosecutor said Mourinho committed two counts of tax fraud in 2011 and 2012.

Recently, Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo have been in news for tax evasion cases in Spain.

Former Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria has been given a one-year prison sentence and fined 2million euros (£1.76million) after pleading guilty to two counts of tax fraud in Spain.

Jose Mourinho - one of the most successful managers of the last 20 years - has been accused of defrauding Spanish tax authorities of $3.6 million during his time as Real Madrid boss.

The Portuguese manager owes Spanish tax authorities 3.3 million euros (2.92 million pounds), a Madrid prosecutor said in a statement, adding it had presented a claim to a local court.

Both Ronaldo and Mourinho are clients of football super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has been summoned to appear before the court at Pozuelo de Alarcon on June 27.

A prosecutor said Mourinho, 54, did not declare income from image rights in order to get an "illicit benefit".

Perez confirmed that he meant to speak to Ronaldo in a bid to defuse his anger over his fraud charges, but it seems there is a viable option open to him if he is determined to make a move this summer. Star striker Cristiano Ronaldo is alleged to have evaded €14.7m also relating to his image rights.

In doing so, he shielded €636,000 from the Spanish taxman in 2012 and 662,000 in 2013, Spanish authorities said.

In Spain, sentences of under two-years are often suspended if the convicted person has no previous criminal record.

In 2016, Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano received a one-year suspended prison sentence for tax fraud while Barca superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar are both now awaiting court decisions.
