Senate panel seeks details on Lynch role in Clinton probe

The Senate Judiciary Committee has opened a probe into former Attorney General Loretta Lynch's efforts to shape the FBI's investigation into 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, the committee's chairman announced Friday.

The Washington Post reported last month there was a document claiming that Schultz sent a letter to Bernado claiming Lynch had been in private communication with Renteria about the investigation claiming the she would not let the FBI investigation go too far. Lindsey Graham and Sheldon Whitehouse, the chairman and ranking member of the key investigative subcommittee.

Comey cited Lynch's June 2016 meeting with former President Bill Clinton on the tarmac of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as contributing to his decision to hold the controversial press conference on July 5, in which he said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had decided against charging Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state.

He also told the Judiciary Committee last month that he had been anxious the Justice Department couldn't "credibly" decline to prosecute Clinton without "grievous damage to the American people's confidence in the justice system".

Largely unreported by the news media, these questions surrounding Lynch are so serious that, in his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee this month, Comey conceded that the appointment of a special counsel in the Clinton e-mail case would have been appropriate due to his concerns about Lynch.

"It gave me a queasy feeling, " Comey testified, adding that the direction gave him the "impression" that the DOJ was aligning itself with the Clinton campaign. Lynch would keep the Clinton investigation from going too far, according to several former officials familiar with the document.

Adding further intrigue to the Lynch document issue, this week Circa cited "sources who were directly briefed on the matter" who revealed that Comey briefed Congress on a "frosty" exchange that he says he had with Lynch centering on the purported document.

Comey in testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Lynch requested he call the Clinton investigation a matter, a request Comey says confused and concerned him. Debbie Wasserman Schultz about the email investigation. Many U.S. intelligence officials, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, believe the memo is unreliable or an outright fake. Please describe the communications and provide all related records. Lynch declined to comment at the time.
