Authorities: Teen slain after leaving mosque, man arrested

Nabra Hassanen died after Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, beat her and then dumped the 17-year-old girl's body in a pond, police said. When the man got out of his auto, the girls ran away and didn't realize until later that Nabra wasn't with them, WRC-TV in Washington reported.

According to Buzzfeed, Nabra and her friends were coming back from eating during a break from Ramadan prayers, when a vehicle pulled up and a man with a baseball bat jumped out and started swinging at the group. Immigration authorities put a detainer on him, saying he's a citizen of El Salvador and there's probable cause to believe he lacks permission to be in the U.S.

The illegal alien did not have any previous run-ins with ICE before he allegedly murdered Hassanen.

Police say it appears that Martinez Torres was "so enraged over the traffic dispute that it escalated into deadly violence".

While the killing has been deemed an act of "road rage", officials are still investigating and say hate crime charges could be filed.

"I want to stop the hating", he said.

Relatives identified the girl to The Washington Post as Nabra Hassanen of Reston. They were walking back from a McDonald's restaurant when they encountered Martinez, said Tawny Wright, a Fairfax police spokeswoman.

"I feel sorry for the guy who take my daughter's life", he said.

ADAMS is one of the largest mosques in the country and is particularly busy during Ramadan. "Community members came across the group and directed them to ADAMS Center". Muslims fast from dawn to dusk during the month of Ramadan. "The driver, later identified as Martinez Torres, was taken into custody as a suspect".

Hassanen was asked by The Guardian if he believed his daughter's Muslim religion was a factor in the attack.

"We urge both local and federal authorities to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation into all possible motives for this gruesome crime", Ahussain said. A report by the Council on American-Islamic Relations found that anti-Muslim hate crime incidents rose sharply in 2015 and increased a further 44%, from 180 to 260, in 2016. The remains were found in a pond at around 3 p.m. Sunday in Sterling, located about two hours north of Richmond.

"I can't think of a worse instance to occur than the loss of a 17-year-old on Father's Day, as the father of a 17-year-old myself", Loudoun County Sheriff Michael L. Chapman said.
