BC throne speech marks beginning of the end for Liberal minority government

Upon his appointment, Premier Christy Clark quipped that Thomson should be cautious of the "eject button" on the Speaker's chair - reference to the expectation that his role as Speaker will not be long-lived.

Former forestry Minister Steve Thomson will serve as Speaker.

Free child care for most British Columbians is just the latest about-face for embattled B.C. Premier Christy Clark faced with the imminent possibility of losing her government.

The New Democrats and Greens signed an agreement at the end of last month to vote against the Liberals in an upcoming confidence vote, ending 16 years of Liberal rule and clearing the path for a minority government led by the NDP.

"As I often say politics needs more rugby players and I think all members will agree even when this debate become contentious... you have sometimes stood alone amongst us as someone who brought calm, who brought fairness of thought, who brought a level of decorum to this house that sadly has become a little unfamiliar over the years".

Andrew Weaver said it was "an exceptional choice" by the Liberals and has set a tone of non-partisanship at the start of the session. The Liberals have 43 seats, the NDP 41 and the Green Party 3. Normally, the Speaker does not vote on legislation. Barring some freakish turn of events (hey, this is B.C.) her government will be defeated and replaced by NDP leader John Horgan and his trio of Green Party allies.

Elections to the speaker position, the referee of the legislature, are a secret ballot vote by all MLAs.

That is "uncharted territory" for a legislature or parliament, say experts.

The Speech from the Throne takes place at 2:15 this afternoon. In the next few weeks, watch as they castigate the NDP as hypocrites for voting against a Throne Speech packed with NDP and Green policy planks.

He says he knows the Liberals face a confidence vote in the legislature that could see their defeat, but the electric vehicle initiative is part of the government's plan to put more zero-emission vehicles on the road.
