Uber finally adds tipping, but only in select cities to start

"Over the next 180 days we are committed to making driving with Uber better than ever".

A sign in front of the 3rd Base Gate entrance indicates to both drivers and passengers where Uber drivers may drop off and pick up patrons at the Atlanta Braves Opening Game at Suntrust Parkin Cobb County, Georgia, on April 14, 2017.

Uber now only allows tipping through the app in Seattle and Minneapolis, with Houston planning to join that small list later this month.

Here's how it'll work: After a trip is completed, passengers will be able to choose from preset tip amounts of $1, $2, $5 or enter a custom amount. These tips will not be charged a service fee, so the driver will receive the entire amount. The company is also rolling out the option in Minneapolis and Houston, and plans to bring it to every city in its market by the end of July.

As part of that six-month commitment, Uber is shortening the window during which drivers can collect a cancellation fee from five minutes to two minutes. Other earnings enhancements include driver injury protection insurance, a teen fare that pays drivers more for teen account trips and eliminating unpaid wait times, among others. That change will roll out nationwide by the end of August, says Uber. "Today's tipping announcement is an important win for drivers and proves that thousands of drivers coming together with one voice can make big changes", IDG founder Jim Conigliaro said in a statement.

The in-app option will allow users to give tips after both Uber auto rides and UberEat food deliveries without deducting any service charges. "Make no mistake, Uber only did this because members of the Independent Drivers Guild pressured regulators".

Lyft recently said it had paid out more than $250m in tips to its drivers.

It's a surprising new feature from a company that aggressively fought against driver's wishes to allow tipping. Shannon Liss-Riordan, an attorney who represents drivers in the California and MA lawsuits, welcomed the change. The company has been repeatedly rocked by lawsuits and scandals with CEO Travis Kalanick consequently deciding to "take a little time off".
