Ivanka Trump visits Capitol to talk family tax policies

Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Sen. "The cost of child care, the cost of long-term care for an elderly parent, the cost of everyday life, the challenges that parents face on a regular basis, the cost of living and unfortunately ... the people who get the most help oftentimes are the people that can afford it the most".

First Daughter Ivanka Trump traded in the White House for Capitol Hill on Tuesday, where she talked paid leave and childcare tax credits with Republican lawmakers.

Rubio also said he would tentatively support a mandate for businesses to provide paid family leave, which has been a key component of the White House plan spearheaded by Trump. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and included Sen.

The meeting did not include any Democrats, who traditionally are more sympathetic to the family policies Ivanka Trump has been working on.

Trump has three children and is often credited with pushing her father to prioritize policies like paid family leave. Advancing parental leave in the Republican-controlled Congress is considered highly unlikely, but winning some family-oriented tax changes are possible.

Rubio is no stranger to calling for a paid family leave - he campaigned on it during his bid for president a year ago. "Whether it's this year or early next year, the time frame will depend on the general course of tax reform ... right now we're in the input stage", he said.

In a statement, he said he was "glad to see strong support for pro-family policies that empower parents to make decisions that are best for their children, and he looks forward to working with his congressional colleagues to make tax relief for working families an essential piece of comprehensive tax reform".

As far as the specifics of any legislation go, a number of proposals are in discussion, Fisher and Rubio said.

Both Rubio and Fischer have introduced separate bills to expand paid family leave through tax credits.

Response to that proposal has been mixed.
