Another police shooting acquittal worries black gun owners

Protestors left what was a peaceful demonstration at the State Capitol Friday night and starting walking down the street, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Officer Jeronimo Yanez was acquitted on three counts, including second-degree manslaughter. The 29-year-old officer has not been on active duty since the shooting last July.

"This is a tragedy that impacts many people and lives in our community were forever changed", St. Paul Public Schools said in a statement.

Now, after a year of marches, hearings and a growing number of national cases with similar verdicts, anger turned into resignation until Friday's not guilty verdict in a prolonged trial struck many as unsurprising - and thousands took to the streets in protest.

The protesters gathered at the Minnesota state Capitol in St. Paul, holding "Black Lives Matter" signs and chanting "No Justice, No Peace!" Some chanted "Hands Up, Don't Shoot".

The evidence included squad vehicle video, but its wide view didn't capture exactly what happened inside the auto. Yanez was also cleared of lesser counts related to endangering Reynolds and her daughter for firing his gun into the auto near them.

Ms Reynolds, whose video showed 32-year-old Mr Castile covered in blood as an officer pointed his gun at him, said he had been reaching for his licence when he was shot.

Philando Castile was shot by police during a routine traffic stop. The dead man had told the policeman he had a gun elsewhere in the vehicle. Hundreds blocked the I-94 freeway previous year after Castile's death was first reported.

Questioned by his defense attorney during the trial, Yanez said: "I was scared to death. I had no other choice".

He told the court he feared for his life and said Mr Castile did not follow his orders, which was denied by the prosecution who said he had been courteous and polite.

Moans of dismay and weeping swept through the courtroom after the verdict was announced. "He made a terrible mistake", Choi said after the verdict, referring to the officer.

"Philando's case is one of the most blatant examples of police officers being allowed to kill people with impunity, and I think it will be a wake-up call for people who thought that at a minimum, at least in this case, there would be some semblance of justice", she said. Yes, I am. My first-born son died.

Jeronimo Yanez was also cleared of two lesser charges related to the July traffic stop in a St. Paul suburb.

The verdict also tells blacks that "the Second Amendment does not apply to them" because Castile "was honest with the officer about having a weapon in the auto, and there is no evidence that he attempted to or meant to use the weapon against the officer", the Louisiana Democrat said. The Twin Cities NBC affiliate KARE 11 and CBS affiliate WCCO captured arial footage of the march.
