Protesters snarl Minnesota freeway after officer acquittal

I have to write about Philando Castile, the 32-year-old black man who was shot and killed by a Minnesota police officer last July.

The prosecution argued that Yanez never actually saw the gun and overreacted to Castile, who was legally carrying a gun.

The incident drew national attention when Reynolds started live-streaming the immediate aftermath of the exchange on Facebook, as Castile lay dying and her daughter sat in the back seat. The Facebook Live video shows the aftermath of the event. "The jury has now resolved the legal issue of criminality by acquitting Officer Jeronimo Yanez", she said.

After the verdict, Castile's mother, Valerie told the media, "There has always been a systemic problem in the state of Minnesota, and me thinking, common sense that we would get justice. My son loved this city and this city killed my son and the murderer gets away exclamation are you kidding me right now?"

"I'm mad as hell right now, yes I am", shouted Castile.

A Latino police officer has been cleared of manslaughter in the controversial shooting death of an African American man in Minnesota.

Reynolds said in the video, and testified in court, that Castile had been trying to cooperate and produce his driver's license.

When I think about how Castile, an elementary school cafeteria worker, was pulled over 46 times before the traffic stop that took his life, I get angry. "I told him not to reach for it".

Castile's family was visibly upset over the verdict on Friday.

After the verdict, the city of St. Anthony, where Yanez was employed, announced he would not return to active duty and would be offered a separation package to leave the force. The St. Paul Public Schools, Castile's employer for 13 years, tweeted a statement underlining that "Mr. Phil's" death has changed the community forever.

Prosecutors portrayed Yanez as a nervous officer who lost control of his traffic stop. "Did they just say, 'Oh, it's Friday and I want to go home?' This was not justice at all".

February 11: Castile's mother, Valerie Castile, unveils a temporary memorial at the site of her son's shooting.

Video footage recorded by Reynolds only seconds after the shooting showed Castile dying in the auto and Yanez standing outside the driver's side of the vehicle, continuing to yell while pointing his gun inside the auto.

Governor Dayton said he will do everything in his power to help Minnesota heal and that there are law enforcement officers who are working to correct the injustices in the state. He thought Castile was reaching for his weapon, a gun that Castile was licensed to carry and that he had informed the officer about moments before.

The defense argued that Castile was under the influence of marijuana and did not comply with the officer's instructions.

Castile had a permit for the weapon.

CNN reports that Jeronimo Yanez was declared innocent of second-degree manslaughter in the July 6, 2016 shooting death of Philando Castile. Although footage from the squad vehicle captured the shooting from a distance, it didn't clearly depict what happened inside the auto during those crucial few moments. The officer felt threatened and opened fire, he testified.

After the rally, police said roughly 2,000 people marched peacefully down streets in St. Paul, at times blocking traffic at intersections and then on Interstate 94, a major highway.
