Nintendo Will Support 3DS "Well Into 2018 & Beyond"

"The internal conversations we have is that on one hand, the development teams would love to showcase their content to a wider base, and certainly in short order the install base on Nintendo Switch will be larger than the install base we ended with Wii U", Fils-Aime told IGN.

During Nintendo's Treehouse stream after their E3 presentation, Metroid: Samus Returns was revealed as an upcoming 3DS game - a remake of the Game Boy title from 1991. In other words, Nintendo wasn't going to roll out a lesser version of the product if it didn't have to.

The game will be arriving on the Nintendo Switch in 2018. To the question why Nintendo requires a smartphone up for voice chat on the Nintendo Switch Fils-Aime said: "We actually think that the phone is going to deliver a better, more robust execution".

Both the Switch and 3DS have a smattering of very interesting titles coming out, so if you're on board with both devices, you've got a whole lot to look forward to.

Fils-Aime touched on the company's recently announced 2DS XL, which is another new device in the same family, after the 3DS XL. "But it's also about getting that adult in India who's never had access to a Nintendo platform but has heard about this thing called Super Mario, to get them engaged".

The concern is that Nintendo's first-party offerings, much as it was with Wii U, won't be able to carry Nintendo Switch.

Momentum began to shift last fall with the release of "Pokemon Sun" and "Pokemon Moon" for the portable Nintendo 3DS, then took an unexpected spike in March with the release of the Switch.

Another problem on the Nintendo Switch is the absence of file management and backing up data.

Fils-Aime was also asked about this issue at E3 2017, and it looks Nintendo is trying to find a way to implement file management for the Switch that's secure and can deter piracy.

"We think the strategy ought to be about every month you see a major tentpole from Nintendo".

The Nintendo of America president also said that they are aware of everything of what consumers are asking for, including Netflix and Amazon Prime support, but the company needs to do it in a way that "makes good business sense".

It literally is game by game, title by title, how we make that decision.
