Injured Capitol Police officer throws out first pitch in emotion

David Bailey, the injured special agent who threw out the first pitch at the baseball game Thursday night, was interviewed by Inside Edition.

Capitol Police special agents Crystal Griner, David Bailey and Henry Cabrera are being hailed for their actions as a gunman attacked Republican congressmen as they practiced for an upcoming baseball charity game in Alexandria, Virginia. "They ran right into the fire".

"The United States Capitol Police is dedicated to its mission to protect the U.S. Capitol, Members of Congress, staff and the visiting public, and today we saw how our officers' extensive training and quick response saved lives", Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said in a statement.

Most members of Congress are not given a security detail but Bailey and Griner had been assigned to House Majority Whip Steve Scalise because he in a leadership position. He graduated from North Carolina Central University in 2007 with a degree in physical education and served as president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

His family said they appreciate the support they've received from lawmakers and the president, and are thankful for the bravery of the special agents.

"He always talked about becoming a police officer, and I remember when he first shared that he was working in Washington, D.C., and that he was a police officer he was so proud", Brooks said.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this senseless act of violence", said Lieutenant Governor Mike Parson.

"It was just chaotic and afterwards it was very sad", he said.

Bailey has been released from the hospital but Griner was still recovering late Wednesday.

Griner was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to her ankle.

Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, said Griner was a 2006 graduate.

"It is clear to me, based on various eyewitness accounts, that without these two heroes, Agent Bailey and Agent Griner, many lives would have been lost", said Ryan, who got a standing ovation in the House chamber.

"She always struck me as incredibly focused, diligent and professional and ready to meet the mission", he said, adding that the officers' response Wednesday was "brilliant and courageous".
