Twitter to get redesign as it seeks to boost user numbers

We listened closely and kept what you love. Since the significance of the changes seems dubious-at-best, Twitter users have been poking fun at the update all afternoon with "Old Twitter vs New Twitter".

Like on Android, the iOS Twitter app's navigation menu will provide quick access to profiles, additional accounts, settings and privacy. The new Twitter app for iOS is now easier to use with less tabs while placing all other settings into one location. This creates "less clutter and easier browsing", Twitter says, although Android users will have already been enjoying this particular update since previous year.

In a more subtle change, Twitter has tweaked its typography to make it more consistent, and added bolder headlines to make it easier for tweeters focus on what's happening. Well, that symbol's being replaced by the more familiar speech bubble (a la rival Instagram).

As you can see in the screenshots above, the app looks a lot cleaner than it has in recent memory.

Will Twitter's redesign attract new users or has that bird already flown?

The biggest change in this release, and easily my favorite one so far, is the support for Safari View Controller in the app.

The company says the changes were driven by user feedback ... Because of that, Twitter has changed the arrow to a speech bubble, which obviously means to reply or join in on the conversation. The update risks alienating long-time Twitter users who may be reluctant to see yet more elements of the "classic" platform disappear forever.

How often do you check Twitter, and do you use the official app or a third-party alternative?

The new interface is rolling out to the mobile Twitter apps, Twitter Lite, and TweetDeck "over the coming days and weeks".

Speaking of interacting with tweets, you now find that things like retweets, replies, and favorite counts all update in real time. Despite now having 328 million users, thanks in part to Trump's tweeting, Twitter still lags behind rivals Facebook, which counts almost 2 billion users, and Facebook-owned Instagram, with its 700 million users. There's still no sign of the much requested "edit tweet" feature.
