Sinn Féin to meet Theresa May, warn against DUP deal

Sinn Fein's newly-elected MPs Barry McElduff, Chris Hazzard, Elisha McCallion, Paul Maskey, Pearse Doharty TD, Michelle Gildernew, Mickey Brady and Francie Molloy during a press conference in Westminster, central London.

With the new government set to present its legislative programme to parliament on June 19, the clock is ticking on efforts to bolster the Conservatives' position after they won just 318 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.

Conservative former Prime Minister Sir John, who was crucial in bringing peace to Northern Ireland, raised concerns about the impact of a Tory deal with the DUP.

"We will oppose any deal which undermines the Good Friday agreement", Sinn Fein president, Gerry Adams, told reporters outside May's Downing Street residence, in reference to the 1998 peace deal that ended three decades of sectarian violence.

Talks aimed at getting the institutions back up and running are taking place in London on Thursday.

Sinn Féin spoke out this afternoon, warning Theresa May that a deal with the DUP would be in breach of the Good Friday agreement.

The Northern Ireland assembly broke down at the beginning of this year after Foster refused to step aside temporarily to make way for an independent inquiry into a bungled green energy scheme.

"The way forward is not to be in a vacuum, to have stagnation, the way forward is to have that forum working on the basis on which it should have been established".

In an extraordinary intervention, Major warned that the deal could cause the peace process, which he played a large part in securing as prime minister, to "unwind" and urged May to avoid risking this at all costs. Exchanges at Stormont Castle on Tuesday are expected to be limited discussions between party officials.

Whitehall sources have blamed "nitpicking" by the Treasury for the fact that no agreement had been reached by last night following two days of talks.

The source confirmed there was no need for a deal on a so-called "confidence and supply" arrangement to be sealed in order to press ahead with the Speech, and said Mrs May wanted the Government to "get on with its business".

Northern Ireland has been without a powersharing executive since March and without a first and deputy first minister since January.

However, a major question mark hangs over the talks as a result of developments at Westminster.

Earlier Mr Brokenshire appeared to rule out an independent mediator to chair the Stormont talks amid criticism his impartiality has been compromised by the anticipated Democratic Unionist/Conservative parliamentary deal.
