Senate Committee Hearing With Intelligence Chiefs

The senators said they were puzzled as to why McCabe would not answer questions about conversations he had with Comey regarding the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's meetings with the president.

"In the three-plus years I have been director of the National Security Agency, to the best of my recollection, I have never been directed to do anything illegal, immoral, unethical or inappropriate", Rogers said.

He grilled Coats with the same questions as well and attempted to get them both to commit to giving more direct and forthright answers in a closed session.

And yesterday, these leading officials refused to provide the committee with non-classified information, saying only that they didn't "feel" or "believe" it'd be "appropriate" to answer important questions - despite having no legal basis for such a refusal.

Former FBI director James Comey will finally make his much-anticipated appearance Thursday on Capitol Hill starting at 10 a.m., providing dramatic testimony that President Trump pressed him to pledge his loyalty and drop the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russian Federation.

The Senate intelligence committee will hear testimony from the former FBI Director James Comey the following day.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats gave a similar answer.

This was acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe at his last hearing: "Sir, I can't comment on any conversations the director may have had with the President", said Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe.

White House officials had weighed trying to block Comey from testifying on Thursday by arguing that his discussions with the president pertained to national security and that there was an expectation of privacy.

King shot back: "What you feel isn't relevant, Admiral".

Coats did not offer any details, but said, "Just because it's in The Washington Post doesn't mean it's declassified".

"I'm not going to comment on any interactions with the president", he said, repeating various versions of that refusal several times.

But Sen. Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, pressed both of them if Trump had simply "asked" them to rebut Russian Federation stories - they refused to answer.

Sen. Angus King had a heated exchange with intelligence officials at the end of Wednesday's public testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. And Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), the committee chairman, did not appear frustrated.

"Are you prepared to say that you have never been asked by the President or the White House to influence an ongoing investigation?" asked Sen. Do you commit to me that you're going to answer these questions in a direct and unencumbered way?

Heinrich: "So you don't think the American people deserve to know the answer to that question". "I'm not satisfied with "I do not believe it is appropriate" or 'I do not want to answer.' I want to understand the legal basis".

The Maine senator, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, then moved on to Coats.

Another source has told CNN that the President may have misunderstood the exact meaning of Comey's words, especially regarding the FBI's ongoing counterintelligence investigation.
